The John’s Family
July 2006
Project Summary
This special family consisted of a struggling single mom with 4 children. Her 3 boys suffered from autism; 1 had turrets, 1 was hearing Impaired and all had celiac disease. The family had help to buy a townhouse, but needed help to make it a safe environment for their children.
Walls of Hope renovated the home; installing soundproofing walls between the adjoining units (to prevent night out bursts with turrets). Mom was sleeping on the couch, so we created a bedroom in the basement and home office for her to work.
Walls of Hope created rooms for the kids to feel safe, have fun and address their individual needs. We removed unsafe furniture/objects and installed new “friendly” environment and furniture to meet the needs of the children. Our team of volunteers corrected exposed heating ducts, created a new eating area in the kitchen, designed and installed new landscaping. As an added touch, we provided: personal makeovers, hotel stays and activities for the family for the family during the renovation project. Walls of Hope created rooms for the kids to feel safe, have fun and address their individual needs. We removed unsafe furniture/objects and installed new “friendly” environment and furniture to meet the needs of the children.
The John’s family was overwhelmed by their home makeover. Each child felt so comfortable and safe in their rooms. Each room addressed and reflected the needs of each of the children. Mom was overwhelmed by how all the safety concerns had been addressed. Making this space safe and to reflect a home for her children was something Mom knew she could never have accomplished without Walls of Hope help. The John’s family has been constant volunteers and help with our cause.
Testimonial:
“There are no words to describe the extent of the emotions my children and I felt upon coming home on the 23rd for our big reveal. Just having been chosen to receive this gift was overwhelming enough. It was so much fun to plan, hope and dream of what might happen that our spirits were filled before the weekend ever began. The reality of what you accomplished in the short time span you were given was a miracle. With each passing day I continue to be amazed by the transformation of our house and wish that everyone could experience this just once in their lives.”
